Anything But Ordinary Addie: The True Story of Adelaide Herrmann, Queen of Magic
Addie was a young girl who always wanted to be amazing. First she became a prima ballerina on stage, then she did tricks on a bike. One day when she was traveling to America on board a ship, Addie met a man named Alexander Herrmann, the Great. He was a magician. Alexander and Addie got married and she became a part of his magic act. When Alexander died, Addie continued the show. She did not think people would come to see a woman perform but she was so good, she become Adelaine Herrmann, the Queen of Magic.
When I first opened Anything but Ordinary Addie, the illustrations looked like nothing I had ever seen before, I thought it looked so cool. Anything but Ordinary Addie is an amazing book. I had no idea that there was a famous, female magician in the 1800s. I love that this book is teaching us about a real women who made history. Addie encouraged other girls to become magicians, even giving away some of her secrets. I think that Adelaine Herrmann would have been somebody who is adventurous, and determined. It is neat that even Harry Houdini looked up to her. I loved that the back of the book tells more about Addie’s life.
