Wordplay: TOON Level 1
This book is all about words—but more specifically, compound words. Butterflies. There is a compound word! The plot is that a girl named Annemarie creates a list of compound words for her homework. Some people that give Annemarie ideas for words are her teacher and her father. Examples: homesick, outside, rabbithole, elsewhere, meanwhile…even “meanwhale”! (Oh! I forgot one! Notebook!) This is a cartoon book that features Annemarie (names are compound words, too!), who likes words! I enjoyed this book a lot because I love words myself. I can relate to Annemarie when she says that she is not playing with her food: “I’m playing with my WORDS!” The illustrations are happy and bright. I think the illustrations look like they are by Chris Raschka, even though they are by the author Ivan Brunetti. I like how he turned the words “Word Play” into art. My favorite thing about this book is how Annemarie whisked herself away into the world of compound words. This book doesn’t remind me of any other books I have read, so I guess it’s original.
