Have you ever felt scared or not knowing what’s to come? Castor, a stray dog, felt like this when he was sent to a dark laboratory filled with strange beasts. The people who created these beasts named them The Unnaturals. They were made to fight. Every creature who enters the fighting ring was once a normal animal but when the scientists injected DNA and poison into the normal animals, they changed. Castor befriends a half-Chihuahua, half-spider named Pookie, Pookie teaches him how to fight and how to survive.

I liked Unnaturals: The Battle Begins by Devon Hughes because there is a lot of adventure, suspense, and fantasy. One of the things that is cool about this book is that in normal life you can’t just inject DNA into an animal and expect that creature to change, but in this book it is possible. Maybe when I grow up I can work on this although I won’t do it to have the animals fight. This is the first book in a series and it only took me two days to read it even though it is over 300 pages long. When the second book comes out, I’ll be one of the first in line to get it.

This book would be good for readers who like animals and adventure, ages 10 to 13.
