The Perfect Secret
After getting in trouble for cheating on the CSAs last year, Gavin, Scott, Randi, Natalie, and Trevor are required to volunteer at the old people home by visiting with the people there. Now it is summer, and this group of friends are doing Mrs. Magenta’s summer program again to visit the home. Since they have been visiting the old people for a while, the kids find out that Mrs. Magenta is the daughter of Mrs. Woods and Coach, one of the old men at the home. The strange thing is that Mrs. Magenta and Mrs. Woods don’t seem to get along, and the kids have decided to make it their goal to reconnect this family, especially since Coach’s memory is getting worse by the day.
The kids learn that volunteering at the old people home is not only good for the old people who live there, but also good for them. The kids learn new things about themselves throughout the story. I really enjoyed how the story was told in the different voices of all the characters; each chapter was written as a different member of the team.
