The Legend of Sea Glass
Long ago, people would not venture into the ocean. They believed that the world was flat and that if you went far away you would fall off the face of the earth but far away, deep in the ocean, lived some creatures called mermaids, half girl and half fish. They were beautiful, colorful and would play all day in the water with other sea creatures, or would come out once in a great while and enjoy the sun.
One day, there was a terrible storm and a ship was turned over. The mermaids saved a young fisherman in front of his father. He kept telling everyone, and as time passed, more and more stories like this one started to spread. And truly, the mermaids tried to save as many sailors as they could, during sea storms. One day one young mermaid tried to save a young sailor but a big wave caught her and she was not able to find him again. She was heartbroken: for the first time a mermaid cried, and her tear went into the ocean. The ocean decided to save that tear, and the many more that came after, from all the mermaids that could not save all the sailors. The ocean changed the mermaids’ tears into colorful glass gems, so that the tears would last forever.
I enjoyed this book so very much. It is a beautiful, sweet story, and from now on I will look at my gem collection as if the gems were precious mermaids’ tears.
