If you like stories with griffins, mermaids, and other mythical creatures, you’ll like Over in the Woodland: A Mythological Counting Journey. Over in the Woodland is similar to the singsongy story of “Over in the Meadow.” In this particular story, mythical creatures are included instead of ones found in the meadow. Mythical creatures such as the griffin, phoenix, unicorn, dwarf, centaur, troll, and several others are in this book. With each new page, the number of them gets higher, like in the original story. I hadn’t seen things like some of the ones in this book before; the pictures they are in are pretty. Ten creatures are in the story; they are each described on their pages so the reader will know a little more about them. At the end of the book are two pages that give a paragraph about each of the creatures.
I learned a lot about mythical creatures in this book because I didn’t know much of anything about them to begin. I think this story will be a good one for kids of any age—it’s fun to have it read to you and to sing along when you know the words.
