Kamik’s First Sled
Kamik’s First Sled is about a boy named Jake and his puppy Kamik, who live way up north in the tundra. Jake wants Kamik to listen and be a sled dog, just like the other dogs. But Kamik is still just a puppy who likes to play. Jake’s grandmother tells him that puppy learn while they play and that Jake should take Kamik away out of town to play and teach him to listen. Jake’s grandmother gives him a package and when he opens it, it is a seal skin sled and harness, so that Jake and teach Kamik to be a sled dog. Jake and Kamik are away from town practicing when a big snowstorm starts and Jake cannot see the village anymore. Will Kamik be able to find their way home?
I really liked Kamik’s First Sled because it was about a boy who lives somewhere very different than I do. I thought it was neat that Jake could go out of the village and teach his dog to pull a sled, that is something I could not do in Texas. I did find some of the inuit words hard to read, but I also thought it was neat to include those words. I learned some of the dog sled words, like “hai” and “avai”.
