Women in Botany (Science Wide Open)
Women in Botany is the kind of book you really want to like but really just don’t like. It’s not readily apparent who the author was writing to. Without any sort of opening, the first pages have a scientific drawing of the parts of a seed, which would appeal to older kids. Then the sentence structure, however, is very elementary: “When people in her city got very sick during the plague pandemic, Loredana’s medicine helped them feel better.”
The selection of featured scientists is good, and many have been featured independently in other books, but the delivery isn’t engaging. The pictures seem computer-generated and not appealing to look at for very long. Women in Botany is part of a series.
