I’ll just start off by saying I liked Tangled Webs, and I thought it started out great. But, yes, the horrible but. But it fell flat for many reasons. The main character, Arista, is the infamous Lady A, one who is feared by many. Only few know that she’s just an orphan pawn to a terrible man, Bones. It’s through him that she lives a life of abuse and starvation. On one of her “jobs,” so to speak, she meets Wild, the man claiming to give her what she wants: freedom. Along the way, we are introduced to secondary characters that you could learn to care about but feel like their only there for fillers in the book. Nic, is another orphan that Arista has feelings for, but the feelings seem like they vanish after Arista meets Grae. They’re supposed to have this deep connection, but I just wasn’t feeling it.

I think I may have had high expectations for this one because I thought this would be about a strong character, who can take care of herself, despite the cards she was given. Instead, it’s like she’s a damsel in distress who always needs saving. I also didn’t think this should be classified as historical fiction. Overall, I liked it, but didn’t love it. Will I read the sequel? Probably. But it won’t be high on my list to read next.
