Leira is a member of the Swallows Clan, where she and her family are the richest people in their town. She has grown up in a large house with many servants and farmers to do work for the family. Leira has just started her sacred journey to becoming a woman when a terrible earthquake destroys the town. The earthquake is just the beginning of the strange happenings that are going on. Leira is thinks that the Goddess is mad and she does her best to please the Goddess. Leira’s life is changed forever and she must learn how to survive.

Leira is forced to grow as a woman without the ceremonies she has always been taught and she has to learn that she is strong by herself and she can help lead her family. This book is written in a very interesting way–the story is told both in prose and in verse. The poems seem to be Leira’s direct thoughts on what is happening around her, which made it feel like the reader was a part of the story.
