Shadow Ops: Breach Zone
After the thrilling conclusion of the previous book, with an entire division of US military personnel rescued from the magical realm called The Source, Lt. Col. Jan Thorsson becomes a national hero. Oscar Britain, previously Public Enemy Number One, is largely respected and revered, and General Bookbinder, the protagonist of the previous book, is also favored by the public. All three of them are hated by the military high command and the new President. However, once Scylla, a walking human weapon, invades Newark with a horde of goblins, rocs, and sea monsters, the government has to turn to the outcasts to save New York and possibly the world.
This book was a lot of fun. It was exciting and action-packed and a little grim but nothing that detracts from the fun. The book switched perspectives among three main characters, which was enough to keep the action unique and fresh without being confusing or desensitizing me to the the plight of any particular one. I enjoyed the way that magic was handled and blended with modern technology and tactics. Overall, an excellent third book; I eagerly await the fourth.
