Halo: Mortal Dictata
After the harrowing opening of the bloody Sangheili civil war, Black Ops Team Kilo Five are deployed to Venezia on a mission to track a dangerous Covenant warship easily capable of glassing Earth. On their arrival, they find that the ship has fallen into the hands of an unstable terrorist. Neutralization of the terrorist and retrieval of the ship should be easy for the elite black ops team, except for one minor factor: the terrorist is the team’s Spartan’s father, and his mission to acquire a warship is part of his quest to find out what happened to his treasured daughter. Kilo Five are forced to decide between their oath to their country, their loyalty to their family and squad, and their duty to do what is right.
As is everything by Karen Traviss, this book is amazing. The characters are fantastically realistic; each word they said brought me closer to them and made me empathize with them more. The book started slowly, picked up steam, and ended with a bittersweet and unexpected twist that perfectly concluded the series. I heartily recommend this book, and all the other ones in the series too.
