If evil shadows, ghosts, and haunted houses are for you, then you will love Cast No Shadow. In this graphic novel, shadows try to take over the world, and the main character (who is missing his shadow), Greg, falls in love with the ghost who ultimately will tame his shadow.

In my copy, the pictures are all in black and white, which gives it a spooky feel. I liked that the dialogue boxes are even different shades of black to tell who is talking–for instance, the ghost’s dialogue bubble is faint, and the shadows’ are done in black-with-white font. I love graphic novels but probably wouldn’t choose this one based on the cover picture.

This is best for young adult readers because of some violence (frames showing punching), romance (kissing), language (stupid, dumb), and because it’s just super creepy! The author does a pretty good job at creating an unusual world, but younger readers might have trouble understanding the plot. I will probably read it again to better understand what happened at the end because I think the author wanted the reader to get something more out of the story.
