Captive of Friendly Cove: Based on the Secret Journals of John Jewitt

The Captive of Friendly Cove was a bloody but extremely informative graphic novel. This book shows what it is like to be a slave in a native islander village. John was a free man who sailed aboard a ship that went to native lands to trade with the Indians. John’s captain angered the chief of the village. The next day, the Indians came aboard Johns’ ship and massacred the crew. As far as John knew, he was the only survivor. As he was a metal-worker, the chief enslaved John, for the chief needed someone who could forge weapons. The next day, John heard that they had found someone on the ship. John thinks it was Thomas, the sail-maker. John turns out to be right. Thomas pretends to be John’s father, sparing him from an awful fate. Will John ever escape? Will the scam with Thomas be found out? Find out in The Captive of Friendly Cove.

This book was very bloody and violent. I wouldn’t recommend giving it to kids ten or under. It would very likely scar kids under seven. It shows what life is like as a slave, and gives a very real feeling of death. This book has the best and worst of human nature.
