Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao
After reading Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao, all my preschooler wanted to do was make “the perfect bao”. So, we will be making the bao recipe included in the book during one of the upcoming holidays when we have a lot of intergenerational family support. This story is very fun and conveys a lot of activity through the text moving places on different pages, the illustrations of varying sizes, and the text growing larger or smaller for emphasis. I did find the changing font size a bit distracting because there was so much going on. Amy Wu loves to eat bao, a steamed bun with a savory filling. However, when she tries to make bao, they never turn out as well as her dad’s, mom’s or grandma’s. The story takes us through how to make bao, and what Amy discovers she needs to make a perfect bao. I enjoyed the illustrations. They were big, bright and playful, but also featured some traditional print drawing/painting techniques.
