The Slave Who Went to Congress
This book is the biography of Benjamin Turner, who was a slave for most of his life but over time persevered and taught himself to read. Being a slave is hard work, and Benjamin worked for many different masters as he was bought and sold at the market. Benjamin found a wife and had a son, but the Civil war began and he started thinking about freedom. In 1863 President Lincoln signed the Emancipation proclamation and Benjamin was a free man. Benjamin worked hard to make a living, no matter what happened. Over time, he used his power and wages to help others, as well as learn about politics. He knew he could help even more people if he served in congress and could help others’ views and thoughts be seen and heard better. He believed in equality for all. This was a very interesting book with nice illustrations. I think it is important to know the history of our nation, so that we can all grow and learn from the past.
