The Rule of One
The Rule of One is a compelling, fast-paced dystopian story that challenges our sense of personal freedom and security. Ava and Mira, identical twins, have lived their entire lives as one person in a future where the Rule of One is the law of the land. Resources in the US have become limited; the government strictly limits families to having one child. Ava and Mira hid their secret until now, and they have become fugitives in their community.
The story is well-written with good plot twists, believable dialogue, and vivid descriptions. It is told in alternating viewpoints from each girl’s perspective, and the main characters are well developed and compelling. The reader will be pulled into the character’s lives and rooting for them throughout the story.
Initially, the characters are difficult to tell apart, but as the story develops their differences emerge as does the strong bond between them. I especially liked that there was no romantic subplot because the critical relationship is the one between the two sisters. This fast-paced story will appeal to young adult readers of all ages. Once you get pulled into the story, you won’t be able to put it down.
