Devils Within
Nate was 14 years old when he killed his father in self-defense. After having been raised in a white supremacist community led by his racist father, he must now face his new life with his uncle in a new community under a new name. He makes friends with Brandon, who is black, and is forced to reconcile his new life with his old beliefs and experiences and the racist thoughts that still come into his head. As he works through his troubling flashbacks from his early experiences, he is overwhelmed by his terrible secrets. As his friendship with Brandon grows, he has to face his fears about what will happen if he gets found out by his new community or found by his father’s followers. Ultimately, he must make a choice about what he reveals about himself. Nate is a troubled and traumatized boy, and his character is realistic and well developed throughout the story. The author writes a strong, compelling page-turner that speaks clearly and powerfully about an important subject. I highly recommend this book for everyone over the age of 14 but especially white people who care about the growing inequalities in our society.
