Night Guard
Synne Lea’s Night Guard book of poetry is calming and relaxing. It didn’t make a lot of sense though. For instance, one poem states: “When Mom’s asleep, she isn’t mom anymore.” Some artwork by Stian Hole was a bit creepy, but I liked the unreal, out of the box paintings. They are detailed and dreamlike surreal paintings. My favorite illustration is one that is shaped like a girl but is filled in with a tree. The poems are mostly about a family including a mom, dad, boy, girl, and their dog. I never got to know the characters very well. But I’d like to read this book again, so I can understand the poems better. The book includes calming topics like nature and family. The poems usually have a message or lesson such as family loyalty, as in this poem: “Just say if you need a friend if I were you, I would call for me.” The poems are a few phrases long and don’t rhyme. This book would be good for ages nine through thirteen and kids that are interested in poetry.
