Just Like Me
Just Like Me by Nancy J. Cavanaugh is about three Chinese girls, Avery, Becca, and Julia. They were all adopted from the same Chinese orphanage when they were babies and now they are almost 12 and all live in America. They have to go to a summer camp together and write about their experiences. Something that Julia does not want to do. She is nothing like her Chinese sisters and she and they and their cabin mates do not get along.
I liked the story because it was exciting and interesting. Julia didn’t want to be a Chinese person but Avery and Becca did. I could relate to that because I’m like Julia in that way. I’m Chinese, but I like my American style. There is a mean girl named Vanessa, who tells every girl that they are bad at everything. We all know girls like that. The book is full of surprises, like when Vanessa unexpectedly changes. The story is mostly written from Julia’s point of view.
This book would be good for girls ages 9 to 13, whether or not they’re Chinese or adopted. It can teach them about growing up and dealing with life.
