What We Hide

The story opens with the plan for Jenny’s brother Tom to go to college in England to keep him out of the Vietnam War, then plans change and Jenny is going too. To impress the others at Illington Hall – the boarding school Jenny is attending – she claims to have a boyfriend. However Jenny is not the only one at Illington Hall that is hiding something. Robbie and Luke pretend they aren’t seeing each other. Brenda’s mouth is shut about what happened with the school doctor. Nico doesn’t want his mother’s story to be read, and Percy’s famous dad is a secret.

We go through the lives of the people attending Illington Hall, and see how secrets are revealed and problems resolved. This book was not bad, but a large portion of the story made me uncomfortable, because of the sexual nature of many of the plotlines and subplots. It’s not really for me, but if you’re not bothered by that sort of thing, the book is well written and the story is engaging, so you might give it a try. I myself will be trying something else.
