The Stone Girl’s Story
Mayka is a 12-year-old girl, carefully carved out of the finest mountain granite. She likes chickens and watching the stars with her living stone friends, such as diamond-clawed Kalgrey, and Jacklo, a very enthusiastic bird. She would be content to live with her loving family forever. You would think, wouldn’t you, that stone brought to life could live forever. Alas, living far away from the city of Skye, with no one to recarve the marks that make up the stories that allow them to live, Mayka’s family is fading. Fading. Fading. Gone? Mayka can’t let that happen. But in order to find a stonemason, she will have to leave the only home she’s ever known, and go into a strange city, full of strange people. Mayka has only heard of Skye in stories. To go there would be nearly unthinkable. What will she do?
I absolutely loved this book! I have never read anything like it. It has fantasy adventures, new ideas, and fantastic stone creatures. Mayka thinks sometimes about flesh and blood, things that I never thought of myself. It is a bit sad in a couple parts, but it has a happy ending. And it has an assortment of awesome characters that will make you grin and giggle with glee, such as Siannasi Yondolada Quilasa, the one carved from firestone; and Harlisona, the really good digger. There is a lot of suspense at one part, too. I could not stop squirming. It is so exciting. If you are going to be a stonemason when you grow up, read this book. If you are going to visit the city of Skye, read this book. If you are being chased by a giant stone giant, read this book, but maybe after. And if you are not, read it anyway!
