This is the second graphic novel in the Sorceline series. Sorceline: Book 2 continues a tale of five boys and girls who fell asleep in the normal world and woke up to be taught cryptography – the study of magical animals – on the island of Vorn. In this volume, the five discover the unknown mother of Sorceline, one of the girls, and fight an evil that kills magic animals.

Even without reading book one, book two is easily understandable, although not stand-alone. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful, in a line-drawn, almost manga style. Evil beings are dark and drawn in a scary way, although combat is not overly bloody. Despite being crammed in occasionally small balloons, the text is very readable, even though the letters are all capitals.

I would recommend this graphic novel to upper elementary and middle school students who like fantasy with fantastic beasts and well-drawn graphic novels. I do not recommend this book for schools, although I think every public library system should have a copy.
