This book is all about the life of President Abraham Lincoln. It starts with his birth in the state of Kentucky (where my daddy used to live) and follows his life to Indiana and Illinois (where my mommy was born!) to Washington, D.C. There are several important people in history mentioned in this book, including Stephen Douglas, Robert E. Lee, and John Wilkes Booth. Douglas was a political opponent, Lee was a general for the Confederacy, and Booth was an actor who shot Lincoln. One thing about this book that I really liked was when Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He helped our country survive the Civil War. Another thing I liked about this book was that, on many pages, there were quotes from Lincoln. For example, Lincoln said, “My best friend is the man who will lend me a book.” The illustrations in this book are not pictures or photographs, but they are paintings. One quotation from this book that I really liked was: “Fondly do we hope – fervently do we pray – that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away.” This was from Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address. I think that boys and girls of all ages who like history would enjoy this book.
