Poesy the Monster Slayer
Poesy is a mischievous biracial girl who lives with her mother and father. She is very interested in monsters. Her dad reads her a book about monsters every bedtime. One night, Poesy defeats four monsters: a werewolf, a ‘great old one,’ a vampire, and Frankenstein’s monster. Unfortunately, she wakes up her parents every time a new monster comes in. Every time they yell at her to go to bed, her name gets longer and longer. It’s funny! She starts out as Poesy Russell Schnegg, but at the end she is Poesy Emmeline Fibonacci Nautilus Russell Schnegg. By morning, her parents are very tired. Her mom says, “You look like a zombie.” Her dad says, “I feel like a zombie.” Poesy tells herself that she will do battle with the zombies another night.
Kids who like monster books will like this book, although little kids will probably get scared and have trouble going to sleep after reading it. I like how every single monster has glowing eyes in the pictures. It’s a good detail. When Poesy’s parents turn into zombies, they have glowing eyes too. They’re not really zombies, they’re just super tired!
