Heartstopper: Volume 1

We rated this book:

This is not your typical love story. In this graphic novel, Charlie is a 14-year-old boy who happens to be gay. Initially, he is hooking up with Ben, who is still in the closet. Ben actually has a girlfriend and only meets up with Charlie in secret. Fate steps in, and Charlie meets rugby player Nick Nelson. The two enjoy hanging out and quickly develop a friendship.

One day, Nick asks Charlie to join the rugby team. Charlie is unsure about this decision because he is scared of letting everyone down and of being bullied. Also, Nick defends Charlie against Ben’s physical attack. It leads to a deeper, more open relationship between them.

Things get confusing for Nick when he falls for Charlie. What does this mean? Is he gay? Should he act on his feelings and risk ruining his friendship with Charlie?

This is a beautifully told story of love, friendship, and acceptance of who you truly are.
