A New Leash on Life
In this book, there is a dog, Smokey, that gets adopted by a girl. The girl takes him on walks, and plays ball with him, and feeds him all sorts of yummy food and takes him everywhere and has a lot of fun with him. But she grows up and gets married and then she has a baby.
When she brings the baby home, she doesn’t have any time for Smokey anymore, because all her time is taken up with the baby. Then when the baby grows into a toddler, the toddler keeps poking at the dog and pulling its tail and bothering it. One day when Smokey was very upset he nipped the toddler, and the mother was very angry and worried so Smokey got sent outside. So then Smokey decided he needed to teach the toddler. So Smokey taught the toddler how to behave with him and how to treat him, like to stay away from him when he was eating, and leave his toys alone, and not pull his tail. So now Smokey and the child are good friends, and the child takes him for walks and gives him treats. But now there is a new baby coming along!
This book is written as a rhyme, so that it will be interesting to really young children, but it is a good book for people of any age to read. It is to help people know what to do when they are having a baby and they already have a dog. It teaches good things to do and wants people who have dogs to keep trying and to know the right things to do so their dogs and their babies will get along and all be happy together as a family. The Humane Society contributed a Q & A section to help families learn how to work with their pets and their children, because they don’t want you to have to give up your family pet just because there is a new baby in the house. If you know how to teach children to act around the dogs, there won’t be any problems.
The pictures in this book are really cute and funny, and Smokey is such a cute little dog – and he is really smart, too, because he teaches the child the right way to act. I like this book because they figure out a way to resolve the problem and decide to work together and be friends. This would be a great book for anyone who is bringing a new baby home to a pet, or who wants to know how to help dogs and young children get along.
