Atlas of Monsters and Ghosts (Lonely Planet Kids)
This book has a great idea: an atlas about monsters and ghosts. An atlas is a collection of maps. It has a bunch of maps showing you where the monsters are, but the ghost of Julie Brown looks like she’s in south Texas, but she’s really from Louisiana. Some of the monsters I know; some I’ve never heard of before. There are creepy ones I wish I never saw, like Boogeyman who will come attack you in the dark. The scariest is an Australian monster Yara-Ma-Yha-Who, who climbs in trees and jumps down on you. There’s another big beast who is friendly if you are nice to him, and mean if you are mean to him. That’s Bigfoot. Some of the illustrations don’t look like the real creatures and some don’t look like anything – like Bigfoot. His jaw droops all the way down to his feet and does not look like Bigfoot. My favorite monster is the Yeti from Asia because he’s tough but if you are nice to him he may protect you. If you’re not nice to him, he’ll be mean. I like the maps except for the part where they put the monsters in the wrong places so you have to read where they live. There is no list of monsters by name in the contents or at the end of the book, so if you want to look up a monster, you have to know what continent it lives on.
