Too Young to Escape
The story of a Vietnamese girl who can’t wait to see her family again. A girl named Van Ho must wait for her family to send for her and her Grandmother so they can escape. The plot was well-written and told Van’s story well. The part that held my interest the most was when the Military Police came into Van’s house and almost found her Grandmother’s secret
money stash.
It was very intriguing and it was amazing to me that a little girl like Van actually went through all the things she did. The characters were amazing and well described. Because it was all from Van’s point of view, I felt that not knowing the characters was completely necessary. They were definitely realistic. The language flowed perfectly. It was exactly how I’d think a little girls mindset to be like. There was just enough writing for me to enjoy authority on the subject sort of indirectly. There weren’t really references made by the author because this is Van Ho telling the story, Marsha Skrypuch is writing it. I feel children 9 and up should read this book because of the story, but it’s obvious that the book is aimed towards children and teens, based on the writing style. Anyone with an interest in Vietnamese history should read this book. I’d recommend this book because it’s an interesting topic. This book was an emotional roller coaster, I loved it.
