The Big Red Rock
Lydia, age four, helped me review the children’s book The Big Red Rock. After I got done reading it to her, with lots of laughs in-between, she responded, “I liked it! I liked all the monsters in the book because I want to see a monster someday; a real one that is alive! I like that they are trying to help Bif.” When asked which monster was her favorite, she responded, “I liked the one that sings.” When asked why, she said, “It was funny that he could break a rock by singing.” But ultimately, the rock singer could not break the rock; “his voice wasn’t loud enough. Maybe if he had a microphone.” She found it funny at the end where the monsters found themselves after playing, and then the story could essentially start itself over again. “I liked when Bif tried to kick and hit the rock, and then he tried to be nice, but nothing worked.” Lydia may not understand yet, but this book has a great message throughout the story.
