The High Climber of Dark Water Bay
I think that The High Climber of Dark Water Bay was pretty good. It is set around the time of the Great Depression when the stock market crashed. The main character, Lizzie, lives with her older sister, her sister’s husband, and their baby since her father died. They are on a very low budget, so Lizzie is offered a summer job working for her uncle at a logging camp in Vancouver. She takes the job but ends up being a hostage at the camp when her uncle is nowhere to be found. She ends up spending her time doing strenuous tasks instead of working for her uncle. This book was very different compared to the other stories that I’ve read that were set in the Great Depression. Even though the setting was tough, I liked the characters’ interactions and connections. Most historical fiction books are similar: they move through the story quickly and usually go something like “This character is set in this time with this problem. This is how they fix it.” This story presented a problem that you wouldn’t expect in a way that you wouldn’t expect. Overall, The High Climber of Dark Water Bay was very creative.
