The Rock Maiden: A Chinese Tale of Love and Loyalty
There was a girl who was in love with a boy. They got married. They had a baby. The boy was a fisherman. One day, there was a big storm, and the fishing boats got mixed up and stuff. The boy didn’t come back. The girl stood on a rock waiting for him to come back. The goddess took pity on her and turned her to stone. Then, many years later, the boy came back, and the goddess turned the girl and her baby back to life.
This story is based on a Chinese legend about a real rock. There’s a rock in Hong Kong called the Amah Rock that looks like a woman with a baby on her back. The author changed the story because the girl stayed a rock forever in the real one.
The real legend is in the back of the book. I like the author’s story better. The illustrations are really good. My favorite picture is the one celebrating the birth of the baby. I like the bright lights, scenery, the lamps, the houses. This would be a good book to read at library story times, in schools, and in home schools, so kids can learn about Hong Kong and the legend. I’d like to see the Amah Rock someday.
