My Year of Epic Rock
Nina has had a comfortable life hanging around with her best friend Brianna, until the first day of seventh grade when Brianna practically dumps Nina to be best friends with a popular new girl named Shelley. Left alone, Nina bonds with a group of kids having similar food-allergy complications at the peanut-free table. As she forms new friendships, the group decides to form a band as well, the EpiPens, to perform at the upcoming school talent show. Now it’s up to Nina to decide whether to embrace her inner rocker and the spotlight, or not.
My Year of Epic Rock perfectly captures the trials and tribulations of growing up in everything from popularity concerns, friendship struggles, and even severe allergies. There are extreme highs and lows for Nina throughout the book creating situations that most readers can relate to in one way or another. Readers are able dive into one of the many aspects of a preteen’s life, adding a layer of complexity to the process of building a solid foundation to a healthy life, and creating a rich collection that would inspire young adults to deal with tough situations in a different perspective.
