Echo
A young German struggles to decide where his allegiances lie. A boy tries to protect his brother. A Hispanic girl deals with change. Each loves music. Each receives a harmonica that guides and comforts them. As these children learn and grow in their own ways, they discover what they are willing to do to stand up for what is right. Music is the underlying theme, pulling all the ends together and connecting them as only a master storyteller can.
These stories were so beautiful. They were all tied together perfectly. I loved seeing the parallels between the stories, and the differences. It was easy to feel for the characters, but their problems weren’t presented in a showy or “pity me” sort of way. It was interesting how different the situations were, yet music and hope could still be found. I especially felt for the German, Friedrich; he had a terrible birthmark that scarred his childhood, but he never considered how it affected other members of his family until it was too late. This book presents many opportunities for thought.
