Gabi and the Great Big Bakeover is about a shy girl named Gabi who begins coming to a new, enchanted bakery called Daisy’s Desserts. Gabi is allergic to all nuts, so she is thrilled when Daisy’s Desserts opens up an allergen-free section in the menu. Meanwhile, at school, the principal wants to find a way to make the school more spirited. Because Gabi loves art so much, she suggests painting a mural in the school’s hall. It turns out that her idea was successful, but it took more to get her idea heard because she is afraid of attention. I loved some of the descriptive words the author used, like “coyly,” “slugged,” and “beeline.” There was definitely enough dialogue because there was so much of Gabi talking at Daisy’s bakery. There were no illustrations. My favorite parts are when she is in the bakery and she’s drawing or talking to Daisy and the waiters. Part of this book is about Gabi’s crush on another boy at school, so if you don’t like a little bit of love, then this might not be the book for you. I think it was handy how the author gives a little recipe in the back of the book for a dessert that was mentioned in the story!
