Helen Thayer’s Arctic Adventure: A Woman and a Dog Walk to the North Pole (Encounter: Narrative Nonfiction Picture Books)
Helen Thayer wanted to be the first women to hike, alone, to the magnetic North Pole. Helen loved adventure and she wanted to hike to the North Pole because that is where all compasses point to. She started in Canada and hiked 364 miles around the pole. Helen took along a husky dog, named Charlie. Charlie would help protect her from polar bears. Helen hiked for 21 days before she made it to the pole. Along the way she faced a storm, a polar bear, and a big crack in the ice. But through it all, Helen believed that she would always make it to the North Pole.
Helen Thayer’s Arctic Adventure is a fantastic book that I couldn’t stop reading. I first wanted to read this book because it is based on a true story and Helen was hiking in Canada; I am part Canadian. Her adventure makes me want to have my own adventures, maybe exploring the northern forests when I visit Canada. I loved the end of the book when they included a page about Charlie, and that Helen kept him as a pet after her hike. I think kids who like to explore would love this book.
