This book is about a boy named Hank. He participates in a cooking contest against Judith Ann, his cousin, and others. Through the contest, he learns that winning isn’t everything, that there are some more important things in life, and that you can make your dad proud.

Here’s Hank: You Can’t Drink a Meatball Through a Straw by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver paints Hank as a very goofy character. Maybe he’s just goofy like a little kid, or maybe he’s trying to get attention. Anyway, he keeps on saying and doing things that are very funny. One time during recess he gets hit by a ball during dodge ball, so he when he gets home he takes an eggplant and pretends that it’s a bruise while making his voice sound like what he imagines an eggplant would sound like. He’s a very likable character, even though he’s impulsive and gets himself into trouble at times. He’s also very creative. In the back of the book there’s a fun quiz about what happened in the story.

This simple and fun book would be good for kids seven to nine years old.
