When Sophie Thinks She Can’t…
When Sophie Thinks She Can’t… is a picture book that teaches us never to give up. It’s about Sophie, who thinks she can’t do something, and she gets annoyed because she can’t get it right. Sophie has a self-esteem problem. She gets mad at her older sister who can do everything better than Sophie can and solves a tangram that Sophie is working on. After reading this book, I got out the tangram puzzle I got for Christmas so I could make my own shapes like the ones at the back of the book. I had so much fun with the puzzle! I tried to put the pieces together in all the different ways I could think of.
I didn’t like reading this book. Both my older and younger brothers said they liked it, but Sophie’s drama wasn’t interesting to me. I get that Sophie needs to keep trying and not give up. The illustrations look strange. People’s hands are too big, and there are thick, colored outlines around everything. Maybe this could be a good book to have in a classroom reading corner for kids who need to take a break. It’s good for kids who for some reason think they can’t learn something.
