We Want a Dog

This book’s illustrations are super stylish. There’s not very much to read, so it’s great for little kids who are just getting started reading. And I really like the art – it’s pretty cool all in black, red and white. The book is funny, because it says, “We want a dog,” and then considers what dogs are like – hairy, dirty, noisy, little or big – and by the end, the voice writing the text decides not to get a dog after all… and to get a cat instead! That made me laugh, but it also made me sad. It’s a little bit strange that the book is dedicated to shelter dogs. If the writer isn’t comfortable with dogs because they can be big, smelly, muddy, and loud, it’s not the dog’s fault, is it? Maybe the author is trying to remind people that dogs are dogs, and if people don’t really want a dog, they should get a different pet. Anyway, I still like the book for the illustrations.
