Walking in the City with Jane: A Story of Jane Jacobs
Walking in the City with Jane, A Story of Jane Jacobs is an inspiring book about a woman who believed that cities are made for people to live in and enjoy. Ever since Jane was a little girl, she was very curious and loved to explore the world. After high school, she moved to New York to live with her sister. There, she learned more about how cities worked, and she loved how people lived in harmony with the city. Jane got very active in the community when she discovered that developers wanted to tear down older parts of the city and build high-rises instead. Together with her neighbors and others in the community, she successfully stopped the developers multiple times. Later she moved to Toronto, Canada with her family, and she continued her work there.
The art in this picture book was beautiful. I really enjoy picture books with great art and important messages like this one. I also enjoy picture-book biographies–they are a fun way to learn about people. Another thing I loved was that Jane protested the big developments and saved the city and people’s homes. I would recommend this book to kids seven and up.
