This Is Your Time
This Is Your Time is the autobiographical story of Ruby Bridges. Ruby was the first Black student to enroll in an all-white elementary school. She was six years old when she lived in New Orleans, Louisiana, and she was the center of a lot of media attention. This book is her way of telling, from her own perspective, what it was like to be yelled as a little kid.
Ruby, who is now sixty-six years old, writes about what it was like before and after the school day as well as how she had to be escorted by four U.S. Marshals because it was unsafe for her family to be the ones to take her to school. It doesn’t stop in 1960, as the book takes us through some of what has happened in Ruby’s life over the last six decades.
This short read is quite inspiring. It is full of black and white pictures from the 1960s through to 2020. I recommend this book to everyone who wants a truly united nation and hopes to eliminate the racial divide in America – that might mean you’re ten years old or it might mean you’re fifty years old, but either way this book is for you.
