The Wolves are Watching is about a very safe town called Picnic, Illinois. One night in the supposedly safe town, a little child is suddenly stolen from her crib. Luce, the only one close enough to the crime to potentially be a witness, finds something shocking about that night. Right after the child was taken, Luce spotted two yellow eyes in the woods, which she believes definitely belong to a wolf. While everybody is quick to blame the child’s mother, Luce thinks something different has happened. She finds out from her English teacher about a similar case that happened in 1868. Luce begins to notice similarities she cannot ignore. Certain that something else is going on in the town that she previously thought was safe, Luce dives deeper into the mystery and tracks the wolf that she saw the night of her little cousin’s disappearance. Her persistence leads her to discover magical animal women in the woods. She soon finds that the animal women that have taken her cousin have no intention of bringing her back. Buy the book to discover if Luce will give up and leave Picnic to its sorry fate or continue on her mission to save her little cousin.

I really liked this book, but it is slightly scary, and it is not a good fit for younger readers. I recommend it for children thirteen years and up. The Wolves Are Watching is filled with mystery and magic and also has a slight touch of hidden realism that really connects with the reader. Read the book and find out how a young teen fights against her town’s hidden past so that she can save her little cousin and possibly protect her town’s future.
