The War Below
Luka is a young man who escaped from a concentration camp during World War II. He was able to escape the Nazis’ grip by pretending to be dead and being put on a transport with other bodies. Once he escapes, he tries to come up with a plan to help his father and his friend Lida escape the camps they are at. While he is attempting to find his way, he comes across a husband and wife who help Luka hide when Nazi soldiers come looking for him. Luka then meets another person who has escaped from a concentration camp, Martina, who ends up joining his journey. Luka is lucky that he seems to always find the right person to help him when he is in need.
Even though this is a story about a sad time in our history, it was a positive story about how people can help one another in bad times. The characters, even when they are not necessarily in agreement, work together, which they learned was much better than working alone. This is a very suspenseful book that keeps the reader wanting to know what will happen next and see if Luka and Martina can survive against all odds.
