The Very Last Castle
The Very Last Castle reminds us not to think something crazy before you even know what’s inside, even if it’s a very mysterious castle! A great read aloud with lots of repeated sounds like, “thud,” “hiss,” “snap,” and “knock.” Young readers or those being read to will enjoy guessing what is making those mysterious sounds before all is revealed at the end.
The main character, Ibb, is optimistic and very relatable in her yellow rain boots, princess dress, occasional butterfly wings, and backpack full of dangling beanies. Ibb is brave and wants to judge what’s in the castle for herself instead of believing the more scary ideas of others.
The pictures help tell the story, especially at the end. Although the first picture is a little creepy–it shows a man with a toothy grin smiling at you. I didn’t think that particular picture fit well with the rest of the story, but the others are fun.
I think this book will mostly appeal to girls aged three to seven, but is a good reminder for all of us to not judge a castle by its sounds!
