Albert is a little boy who lives with his mom and dad. Albert isn’t happy that it’s just the three of them. He really wants a pet; he’d be happy with any animal. His parents make excuses about why he can’t have one – allergies, no time, or no room; Albert doesn’t like it but can’t do anything about it. One day, his dad gives him a present – a potato! Albert isn’t sure at first, but his potato makes a perfect pet and does everything with him! Later, the potato gets old and squishy, which makes Albert sad. Albert buries his potato, and not too long after, he finds a wonderful surprise!

The Pet Potato is a funny and fun-to-read book; it reminded me of the Muppet Babies episode when baby Gonzo had a potato as a best friend. I have a pet already, but I could understand how Albert was feeling. I enjoy my baby dolls as he does the potato. Kids with and without pets will love this book and want to read it over and over because the story is good, and you learn more about the life cycle of a potato.
