The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read was kind of an exciting read. I thought it would be like other similar stories about slavery, but I was wrong. This story was engaging, and I was able to read it alone. I loved reading about all the stuff she did. And I liked how she vowed to be able to read one day and she did it, even though she was old when she learned to read. I will remember Mrs. Mary Walker because of this book.

I would recommend this book to kids age 8-10.
