The Night Diary
The Night Diary takes places in the year 1947 in India after it was just freed from British rule. Nisha tells her story by writing in a diary to her mother, who died when she was little. She soon learns that Muslims and Hindus across the country are angry with each other and will start a war. Nisha struggles and is confused because she feels related to both sides because her mother was a Muslim and her father is Hindu. Eventually, her father decides that they must leave the town together with their grandmother and brother, Amil. They take some possessions but must leave most things behind, including their good friend, the cook Kazi. Nisha is very sad about leaving but soon faces bigger problems on the long journey ahead. The family must carry all their belongings and large jugs of water through the desert to survive. They travel for many, many weeks in high heat and dirt until they arrive in Jodhpur, where more relatives live.
This was a great historical fiction novel, and I think it would make a great history study for kids 11 and up. I also liked the Indian glossary and all the Indian food mentioned. I think everybody can learn a lot from Nisha’s story!
