I love this story! Ariel Torres is an orphan girl who has been adopted by a new family. They all have magic. The kids go to school, just like regular kids, except they learn magic there. Ariel is a powerful witch, but she can’t control her power. Aster, her adoptive brother, is still trying to learn to shapeshift like boys are supposed to. He really wants to be a witch, like his older sister Juniper, who was named the Midwinter Witch at an annual festival the year before. But only girls are supposed to be witches. Meanwhile, Ariel is surprised when her mother’s sister finds her. Ariel thought she didn’t have any biological family after her mother died. But her aunt is an outlaw and has been in hiding. She wants Ariel to come live with her.

So this graphic novel is really about big things like choosing your real friends, being true to them and how that shows the person you really are. Families can be a source of support, or they can hold you back. Ariel and Aster both have problems with their families force them into difficult situations. They find out that their friendship is an important part of their lives so they can help each other.
