The Kid from Diamond Street: The Extraordinary Story of Baseball Legend Edith Houghton

I loved reading this book Kid from Diamond Street by the same author and illustrator as Brothers at Bat. Edith Houghton tried out for a pro baseball team at 10 years old. That is amazing to me. What she lacked in size she made up for in skill and hard work. She had a lot of determination and never gave up. I like to think that is what I am like on the baseball field too. I am smaller for my age but I try my best and never give up. Last summer I tried out for a travel federation team that many of my friends were trying out for. I had to work really hard and practice to try out for the team. I did make the team and many kids that tried out didn’t make it. I think I made it through because I worked extra hard. Another connection I had with the story is playing shortstop, which is one of the most important positions. Edith became starting shortstop and that is the position I play in baseball too.

This story is a wonderful piece of history that I would never have known about if I didn’t read this book. In 1922, Edith at 10 years old tried out for the all-female Philadelphia Bobbies. My favorite part is when Edith and her team played in Japan when she was only 10 years old. I also loved how Edith would make more people come to see the girls play baseball, everyone wanted to see her play. I would tell my friends to read this book because it gives a great story of something important in our history and like my mom says not just boys can play baseball or any sport.
