The Hungriest Mouth in the Sea
This book is about lots of creatures that live in the sea. It keeps asking, who is the hungrier mouth that is heading this way? So the book starts with plankton, then krill, then cod, then penguins, then seals, then orcas. It is about food chains. And it shows you not just one food chain, but some other animals that eat the lower level in the chain, too, like you see that krill eat the plankton, but so do seahorses and jellyfish. Seals eat the penguins, but so do barracuda and dolphins. But nothing eats the orca – it’s the top of the food chain!
This is a good book for younger children who are just starting to learn about food chains and about the ocean. The pictures are really fun because they have been made from paper cutouts but they still look like scenes from the ocean. The words sometimes rhyme and they keep asking the same questions, so that is fun for younger children to answer and guess what is coming next. There are some pages at the end that have a food web game and some other games you can play about the hungriest mouth in the sea!
